Theatre to debut “Theory of Relativity”

“The Theory of Relativity,” a musical put on by Cy Creek Theatre, will premiere Jan. 18-19 in the auditorium. The musical will highlight the relationship between humanity and space.

Drama Club President and senior Katherine Nguyen auditioned for the musical.

“We had to come in prepared with 16 bars of a musical theater contemporary song, which is 30-45 seconds in the style of the show based off of the part you want, and then we sing our song,” Nguyen said.

However, potential cast members still have more to prove.

“We have a movement portion where we’re taught a dance, and we do it as a group to see if we can catch rhythm,” Nguyen said.

Sophomore Keandrea Travis taught the auditioners a movement piece so that they could be further evaluated for a spot in the musical.

Nguyen did not expect to be asked to be called back to sing another song, but she expressed her excitement to work and learn new warm-ups.

Unlike last year’s “Charlie Brown” musical, “The Theory of Relativity” is a more mature, intimate show, allowing cast members to connect and speak to the audience.

“This production will just be more grand,” Nguyen said.

This production gets into a deeper message, one that really makes people not only think, but feel.

Freshman Stephanie Stafford auditioned for the tech crew, and this is her first production experience with Cy Creek.

“My goal is to become a better crew member, learn more things, and become more experienced,” Stafford said.

Stafford has had past tech crew experience with theatre at Hamilton Middle School but is excited to learn how to benefit her new crew.

“It seems much more advanced than all the middle school plays, and I’m excited to see how it goes,” Stafford said.

With this year’s theme being “space,” the theater department will produce a number of shows about humanity’s relationship with the great unknown.
